There’s repetition and rhythm in the way everything in nature operates. If it came into
existence naturally, it has a flow. From the smallest fragments in natural systems, to entire
ecosystems.
This painting to me is a suggestion of renewal
The Artform
Contemporary mixed media brings together different materials and techniques such as drawing, painting, collage, thread, pigment, texture, and layering. The combination of these elements creates depth, movement, and tactile surfaces, allowing traditional and experimental processes to exist together.
Works on paper and material-based practices often explore line, form, texture, nature, and space through intuitive mark-making and layering. The process can transform simple materials and organic forms into atmospheric compositions that invite close observation and interpretation.
The Artist
Komal Mishra is a self-taught visual artist who transitioned from a decade-long career in brand marketing to pursue her artistic practice full-time in 2024. With an academic background in Biotechnology and a professional engagement with natural history, her work is deeply informed by an enduring curiosity about the complexity, structure, and beauty of the natural world.
Her practice moves between intuition and meticulous observation, combining diverse techniques and materials such as fine-lining, pointillism, surface imprints, pigment transfer, staining, threadwork, patchwork, and the use of natural materials including fabric and leaves. Her contemporary compositions often draw from Japanese concepts of balance, repetition, and impermanence, while remaining rooted in Indian handmade traditions.
Inspired by practices including block printing, Indian miniature painting, hand embroidery, and textile layering, Komal creates richly tactile works where repetitive marks and intricate details become a way of observing and interpreting nature.
