The Artform
The Gond art originating in Madhya Pradesh derives its name from the Dravidian word kond which means green mountain. Over the years the Gond artists have developed a bold visual vocabulary that uses naturally occurring pigment colors such as black, deep red, white, and ochre. The geometric patterns involving dots are used to create an intricate image of animals and the natural environment with an infusion of a distinct style of each practising Gond artist. The history of the Gond tribe goes back 1400 years, with it comes a heritage of Gond Pradhans, who were musicians and storytellers within the tribe, and the primarily practised Gond art which has transcended from being painted on mud walls to canvas and papers. It is also popular in regions like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha.
The Artist
Manoj Kumar Tekam (born 2 February 1986) is a contemporary Indian artist from the Gond tribal community in Madhya Pradesh, known for his detailed work in the traditional Gond painting style. He learned the art under the guidance of the renowned artist Bhajju Shyam and draws inspiration from the forests, wildlife, and everyday life of his region, using vibrant colours and intricate patterns typical of Gond art. After working with Bhajju Shyam for several years, Manoj prefers the tranquillity of his village, visiting cities primarily to source materials for his work.
Manojs paintings often feature wildlife and nature motifs that reflect the culture and environment of Gondwana, and he has exhibited and sold works through galleries and auctions internationally. His commitment to preserving and evolving Gond art continues to earn him recognition among collectors and lovers of tribal art.

For artworks that are made to order, the time to prepare each piece differs. Our team will inform you about the preparation time. You will receive updates on the behind-the-scenes prep every 4-5 days- we want you to be a part of the creation process.
