The Painting

When life seems utterly confusing often going in loops over and over again, through repetition of thought and action one hopes to arrive at answers. ‘Looping’ thinks through the anxieties that emerge when humans lose their sense of control.

The Artform

These works belong to the contemporary works-on-paper and mixed-media drawing practice, combining Indian ink, natural pigments, pastel, graphite, charcoal, pencil, and water-soluble graphite on handmade paper and Khadi paper. The fluidity of ink and pigment is layered with delicate drawing and gestural marks, creating subtle textures, stains, washes, and organic forms. The artform uses line, abstraction, movement, and materiality to explore inner and emotional landscapes. Rather than relying on defined imagery, the works allow forms to emerge through fluid marks and textures, creating visual expressions of anxiety, uncertainty, memory, isolation, resilience, connection, and the changing relationship between the body and its surroundings.

The Artist

Tasneem Lohani (b. 1996) is a Bengaluru-based contemporary artist whose practice explores alienation, disembodiment, and social fragmentation in an increasingly digitised world. Her work examines techno-capitalism, digital communication, surveillance, and algorithmic systems, focusing on their impact on identity, perception, relationships, and mental health. Her recent research turns toward traditional Indian textile dyeing practices and natural materials, exploring slower and ecologically responsive forms of making as a counterpoint to extractive digital economies. Lohani holds an MFA from Kingston University, London, and a BVA in Fine Art from Stella Maris College, Chennai. Her work has been exhibited in India and internationally, and she has participated in residencies in Leipzig, London, and Bengaluru.
