The Painting

Rich in symbolism and ceremonial detail, this Mata ni Pachedi painting depicts the Divine Mother as a powerful guardian accompanied by celestial beings and sacred motifs. Traditionally created as a portable shrine for communities without access to temples, every intricate line becomes an act of devotion, transforming cloth into a living space for worship, memory, and faith.

The Artform

Mata ni pachedi means “behind the Mother Goddess”, and is a cloth that constitutes a temple of the Goddess. When people of the nomadic Vaghari community of Gujarat were barred from entering temples, they made their shrines with depictions of the Mother Goddess on cloth. The paintings usually have a set pattern, with the Mother Goddess dominating the central area, surrounded by deities and commoners worshiping her with equal reverence. This art form is deeply rooted in the Bhakti movement and Jain culture, tracing its beginnings to the late 17th century. Originally, Mata ni Pachedi served as a religious textile to depict the goddess Devi, often Durga or Amba, within the sanctified spaces of temples or during festive processions. The art form's dual nature of being both a form of worship and a visually captivating craft lends it a distinctive significance.

The Artist

Sanjay Manubhai Chitara is a distinguished Mata ni Pachedi artist from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and belongs to one of the last surviving families dedicated to preserving this centuries-old ritual textile tradition. He began learning the art at the age of twelve under the guidance of his father, Manubhai Chitara, himself an accomplished master artisan. A recipient of the National Award, Sanjay has spent decades preserving the sacred visual language of Mata ni Pachedi while thoughtfully adapting its compositions and colour palette for contemporary audiences. His work has been exhibited across India and continues to uphold a family legacy that spans over three centuries, ensuring the survival and evolution of this unique devotional art form.
