The Painting

The Scarlet Whisper presents a striking stylised figure framed by intricate patterns and washes of cool blue, ivory and warm coral. The vivid red lips and expressive facial details become the focal point of the composition, creating a subtle contrast against the otherwise delicate palette. The work balances whimsy and stillness, using simplified forms, ornamental details and an exaggerated gaze to create a character that feels both familiar and fantastical.

The Artform

Contemporary Figurative Art uses recognisable human forms while allowing artists to reinterpret them through stylisation, symbolism, colour and pattern. Rather than focusing on realistic representation, contemporary figurative works often explore mood, identity and emotion through distinctive visual languages. Vikalp Durga’s practice combines stylised figures, expressive eyes, botanical motifs and delicate patterning to create works that feel both whimsical and contemplative.

The Artist

Vikalp Durga Mishra is an Indian multidisciplinary artist and designer known for his distinctive watercolor paintings featuring stylised human figures, expressive eyes, birds and botanical motifs. His work explores themes of nature, memory, empathy and human connection through delicate linework, muted colours and whimsical compositions. A graduate of ISDI School of Design and Innovation, Mishra has worked across art, fashion, illustration, textile and creative direction. His work has been featured in contemporary exhibitions, including Babydoll at Indra Gallery, London, and has been recognised by Homegrown for his distinctive approach to reimagining the human form. He has also contributed as the cover illustrator for Feminist Fables.
