The Painting

Two stylized animals are positioned in opposite directions yet remain visually connected. Their bodies are filled with intricate linear detailing that brings movement and life to the still image. The composition suggests duality — balance between strength and grace, individuality and companionship. It reflects harmony within contrast.

The Artform

The Gond art originating in Madhya Pradesh derives its name from the Dravidian word kond which means ‘green mountain’. Over the years the Gond artists have developed a bold visual vocabulary that uses naturally occurring pigment colors such as black, deep red, white, and ochre. The geometric patterns involving dots are used to create an intricate image of animals and the natural environment with an infusion of a distinct style of each practising Gond artist. The history of the Gond tribe goes back 1400 years, with it comes a heritage of Gond Pradhans, who were musicians and storytellers within the tribe, and the primarily practised Gond art which has transcended from being painted on mud walls to canvas and papers. It is also popular in regions like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha.

The Artist

Gariba Singh Tekam is a celebrated Gond painter from the Pardhan Gond community in Madhya Pradesh, India. Born in 1976 into a family of artists, he was encouraged by the pioneering Gond painter Jangarh Singh Shyam to pursue painting professionally, and his work reflects deep roots in the traditional Gond style with vibrant colours and forms. Tekam often draws on themes from nature and folklore, creating richly detailed compositions that celebrate tribal heritage. He is especially known for his striking animal motifs, including bold depictions of tigers and other wild creatures, where the dynamic forms and intricate patterns bring the subjects to life in classic Gond aesthetic. His paintings have been exhibited and appreciated nationally, and he also works at the Museum of Mankind in Bhopal with his wife, helping showcase Gond art to broader audiences.
