The Painting

The composition is built from long, curved blue lines that travel across the cloth like stems, veins or flowing contours. Fine repeated stitches fill the spaces between these lines, creating a second layer of movement beneath the bold outlines. The limited blue-and-white palette keeps the work quiet and spacious, while the irregular hand-stitched marks make the surface visibly tactile. The traditional language of Sujini is brought into an abstract register here: instead of depicting a recognisable story or figure, the embroidery describes movement, rhythm and the structure of the surface.

Traditionally practiced by women, it involves layering fabric and using fine running stitches to create intricate surfaces. Today, Sujini continues to evolve through contemporary interpretations while retaining its distinctive hand-stitched character. Sneha is a contemporary Sujini textile artist whose practice explores the expressive possibilities of hand-stitched surfaces. Working with layered fabrics, embroidery, and carefully built textures, she creates atmospheric compositions inspired by nature, landscapes, organic forms, and the passage of time. Her works balance traditional Sujini stitching with a contemporary visual language. Delicate repetitive stitches, earthy neutrals, deep blues, metallic accents, and raw textile textures come together to create pieces that feel both tactile and contemplative. Through her practice, Sneha brings the quiet, meditative quality of hand embroidery into a contemporary art context.
