The Painting

The artwork hand-painted by Kalyan Joshi, is made in the traditional style of Phad painting. The tableau depicts Asht Lakshmi, eight forms of the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. As prosperity exists in different forms, each manifestation of the Goddess presides over eight unique sources of wealth. The eight manifestations are described as Adi (objective), Dhana (prosperity), Dhanya (good health), Gaja (animal prosperity), Santana (progeny), Veera (strength), Vidya (knowledge), and Vijaya (power). He has used natural stone colors on paper to portray the eighth manifestations of Goddess Lakshmi. The palette consists of deep colors and bold lines and all the figures are shown having exaggerated features.

The Art

"Phad art stands as a revered traditional genre of religious scroll art, originating from the Bhilwara district of Rajasthan. The term ""phad"" draws its meaning from the local Rajasthani language, symbolizing ""fold,"" a fitting descriptor for these scroll paintings which are meticulously crafted on fabric, often cotton or silk. The artisans behind these mesmerising phad paintings boast a rich lineage, with certain scrolls tracing their roots back to the 17th century. These intricate artworks vividly narrate the tales of local deities and heroic figures, with a special emphasis on Pabuji and Devnarayan, revered by the Rabari tribe in Rajasthan. Among the Rabari community, the Bhopas, who assume the roles of priest-singers, carry these painted Phads akin to mobile temples, adding a spiritual dimension to their journeys. Phad paintings are renowned for their vibrant palette, featuring bold hues and intricate lines that accentuate the exaggerated features of the depicted characters. Typically measuring around 20 to 30 feet in length and approximately 5 feet in width, these paintings captivate with their expansive storytelling canvas. "
