The Painting

"Turning, Towards is a creative programme that brings together India’s diverse painting traditions and contemporary design to create a new visual language. Focused on affordability and accessibility, the initiative works with Indian legacy art forms—studying their materials, motifs, and storytelling structures —and reinterprets them into smaller, modular compositions. The programme’s curriculum is rooted in heritage craft practices and design thinking. Each collection is the result of close collaboration between Bridge Bharat, artists, designers, and craftspeople, driven by deep material research and experimentation. The outcome: a fresh body of collectible artworks that honour tradition while turning towards the future."

The Artform

Bhil art, a captivating tribal art form from central India, boasts a rich history deeply connected to the Bhil people's way of life. Traditionally adorning mud walls and shrines, these paintings expressed their beliefs and connection to nature through a simple style. Bold outlines, flat perspectives, and a limited palette of natural colors depict animals, symbolic of the natural world, and scenes from daily life or mythology. The use of dots, in vibrant colors distinct from Gond art, adds texture and depth to these narratives, offering a glimpse into Bhil traditions and customs. In recent times, Bhil art has expanded beyond walls, finding expression on cloth, paper, and other surfaces, captivating a wider audience and preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Bhil people.

The Artist

"Sangeeta Bariya, born in 2002 in Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh, belongs to the Bhil tribal community, one of the oldest indigenous groups in India. Raised in Bhopal, she developed a deep passion for painting from an early age. After completing her education, she immersed herself in the traditional Bhil Pithora painting, a ritual and cultural art form passed down through generations in her family for over 20 years. Guided by her husband Aanand Bariya, and in-laws Sharma and Dubu Bariya, Sangeeta learned the unique style that features natural pigments and symbolic motifs, especially the traditional ""bindi"" dot patterns drawn using the thumb. With 5 years of professional experience, Sangeeta has exhibited her work in major cities such as Delhi, Bangalore, Bhopal, Ujjain, and Jamshedpur (Jharkhand). Her paintings often reflect tribal beliefs, ceremonies, and nature, staying true to the Bhil tradition while adding her own contemporary touch. Sangeeta continues to promote Bhil art with dedication, aiming to preserve this vibrant folk legacy through exhibitions and community engagement."
