The Painting

The artwork hand-painted by Kalyan Joshi, is made in the traditional style of Phad painting. The artist has depicted the epic of Pabuji which is an oral epic in the Rajasthani language illustrating the deeds of the folk hero-deity Pabuji Rathore, who lived in the 14th century. He came from a family of poor farmers but rose to become a powerful Rathore Rajput chieftain and warrior. Traditionally his tales were sung by a group of Bhopha bards and as such the artist has arranged this panorama of medieval Rajasthan where women, horses, singers, musicians archers, kings, and queens, all are arranged around the central outsized figure of Pabuji, who is shown on his magnificent black mare, Kesar Kalami, accompanied by his four great companions and brothers-in-arms. The artist has painted this image in the traditional Phad style of painting with the use of natural stone colors on cotton cloth. The palette consists of bright colors and bold lines and all the figures are shown having exaggerated features.

The Art

Phad painting is a traditional style of religious scroll painting, which is native to the state of Rajasthan. The word phad means “fold” in the local Rajasthani language, and thus refers to scroll paintings made on cloth, typically cotton or silk, which are then folded and unfolded during the performances of accompanying folk songs and stories. The paintings depict the tales of the local deities and heroes, particularly of Pabuji or Devnarayan who are worshiped by the Rabari tribe in Rajasthan. The Bhopas, the priest-singers within the tribe, carry the painted Phads along with them as mobile temples. They are usually done in bright colors with bold lines and exaggerated features and are about 20-30 feet in length and about 5 feet wide. The artists known as phad painters come from the Bhilwara district of Rajasthan and have a long history, with some scrolls dating back to the 17th century.

The Artist

Born in 1969, he first began painting from the age of 8 with his father Shri Lal Joshi who was an acclaimed Padma Shree honoree and took the family inheritance to a newer heights. He is the founder of “Ankan Artist Group”. And since 1990 has conducted 200 workshops at various schools all over India and at SPICMACAY. He has his works exhibited in various spaces in countries such as the USA, Dubai, Spain, France, and Australia. He has won several awards including the National Award by the Govt. of India (2010), the National Merit Award by the Govt. of India (2006) & the Gauri Shankar Mehta Award, and the Maru Parampara (2008).
