Here we are at Bhilwara,a city in Rajasthan lovingly known as 'the City of Textiles and Looms'. Here we sought to unearth the treasure trove of stories that reflects the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Our artistic exploration began with a visit to the studio of artists Dinesh and Manish Soni, renowned Pichwai artists who have dedicated their lives to preserving this ancient tradition. With infectious enthusiasm, they delved into the intricacies of Pichwai art, explaining the symbolism behind various motifs and the significance of this devotional art form. Guided by their expertise, we ventured to a 250-year-old temple associated with the revered saint Devanarayan Bhagdavat, where we stood in awe of a magnificent Phad mural that adorned its walls. This vibrant mural, with its bold colours and captivating storytelling, served as a testament to the enduring legacy of Phad art.

On our second day, we were honoured to visit the renowned Chitrashala, run by national award-winning Phad artist Kalyan Joshi. As we stepped into his studio, we were immediately transported into a world of artistic mastery. Kalyan Joshi, with his deep-rooted passion for Phad art, guided us through his studio practice, showcasing the meticulous techniques and traditional methods that have been passed down through generations. We observed with fascination as he transformed blank canvases into vibrant narratives, breathing life into the ancient tales depicted in Phad paintings.

Our journey through Bhilwara extended beyond the confines of studios and galleries, as we ventured into the bustling lanes and serene temples of the city. Everywhere we turned, we were greeted by the artistic traditions of the Joshi family, proudly displayed on the walls of homes and temples. The auspicious symbols and vibrant colours of Phad art adorned the city's landscape, serving as a constant reminder of the deep-rooted connection between art and faith in this region.

As our time in Bhilwara drew to a close, we carried with us a profound appreciation for the city's rich artistic heritage and the talented artists who continue to uphold its traditions. Our journey into the world of Pichwai and Phad art was not merely a visual feast; it was a journey into the heart of Bhilwara's soul, where art and culture intertwine to create a tapestry of beauty and inspiration. We left Bhilwara with hearts full of gratitude for the opportunity to witness the enduring legacy of its artistic traditions and the passion of its artists.
