The Painting

The composition is divided into two distinct stitch systems: compact horizontal lines across the upper portion and long vertical passages below. This simple structural division gives the work an architectural quality, almost like a wall, curtain or built landscape. The lower section is deliberately restrained, with fine lines descending through the cloth and creating subtle variations in density. The piece demonstrates how a traditional embroidery technique can generate a contemporary abstract composition through nothing more than direction, repetition and spacing.

The Artform

Sujini is a traditional embroidery art form from Bihar, particularly associated with the Muzaffarpur region. Traditionally practiced by women, it involves layering fabric and using fine running stitches to create intricate surfaces. The art form often draws inspiration from nature, everyday life, folklore, and personal experiences. Today, Sujini continues to evolve through contemporary interpretations while retaining its distinctive hand-stitched character. Its repetitive stitches, tactile surfaces, and thoughtful narratives make it a unique textile practice that connects traditional Indian craftsmanship with contemporary artistic expression.

The Artist

Sneha is a contemporary Sujini textile artist whose practice explores the expressive possibilities of hand-stitched surfaces. Working with layered fabrics, embroidery, and carefully built textures, she creates atmospheric compositions inspired by nature, landscapes, organic forms, and the passage of time. Her works balance traditional Sujini stitching with a contemporary visual language. Delicate repetitive stitches, earthy neutrals, deep blues, metallic accents, and raw textile textures come together to create pieces that feel both tactile and contemplative. Through her practice, Sneha brings the quiet, meditative quality of hand embroidery into a contemporary art context.
