The Painting

This artwork by Amit Dhombhare presents a captivating depiction of the rain god in the contemporary Warli style. The central figure, rendered in white acrylic paint, dominates the composition. The figure has a prominent head, possibly signifying its importance, and multiple limbs extending outwards. These limbs could represent the rain god's power or its ability to reach all corners of the earth. The figure is surrounded by swirling lines and geometric patterns, which depict rain or symbolize the life-giving energy associated with the rain god. The use of simple geometric forms, the incorporation of cow dung pigment (possibly in the background or for subtle details), and the focus on a deity all connect this artwork to the Warli art tradition. Rain holds immense significance for the Warli community, as it is essential for agriculture and their way of life. The depiction of the rain god, Pavsya Dev, reflects the community's reverence for this deity and its role in their well-being.

The Artform

Warli art originates from the tribal heartlands of Maharashtra where the members of the tribe would create intricate wall paintings using natural materials like rice paste, red ochre, and charcoal as part of their daily rituals and ceremonies. These paintings served as an artistic expression and a mode of communication, preserving the tribe's cultural heritage for generations. The distinctiveness of Warli lies in its simplicity and symbolism. Rendered primarily in white against a red ochre background, these paintings feature geometric shapes, such as circles, triangles, and squares, to depict human figures, animals, nature, and mythological tales. The art form's themes revolve around tribal life, communal harmony, and the interconnectedness of humans with nature, reflecting the Warli people's deep spiritual beliefs and reverence for their environment.

The Artist

"Born on August 17, 1985, in Dahanu, Maharashtra, Amit Dombhare draws inspiration from his Adiwasi Warli roots. With over 20 years of artistic experience, he embarked on his Warli painting journey in the year 2000. Learning the traditional craft from his grandfather, Jethya Dombhare, and later under the guidance of acclaimed artist Anil Vangad, Amit Dhombare's work reflects a deep connection to his cultural heritage. Using traditional materials such as canvas cloth primed with cow dung and colors derived from rice paste mixed with neem, His artworks capture the essence of Warli traditions. Unlike conventional Warli compositions, he brings a unique perspective, infusing modernity and technology to showcase the evolving life in his community. Amit Dombhare's artistic journey extends across renowned platforms, including participation in the National Craft Museum in Delhi and exhibitions at Delhi Haat. His creations have captivated audiences in diverse cities such as Pune, Jaipur, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Mysore, Indore, Bhopal, Goa, Haryana, Hyderabad, Gwalior, Dehradun, Odisha, and more. Through these exhibitions, Amit has woven a rich tapestry of Warli art, transcending regional boundaries and sharing the cultural legacy of his Adiwasi Warli heritage. "
