The Painting

This subtle composition unfolds as a dense field of floral and geometric motifs, arranged in an almost architectural grid. The restrained palette creates a soft visual rhythm, inviting slow observation rather than immediate focus. Each form feels suspended between repetition and variation, evoking calm, refinement, and contemplative balance. The artwork speaks through silence and precision.

The Artform

Chikankari is an exquisite and delicate embroidery tradition originating from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, celebrated for its subtle elegance and refined craftsmanship. Traditionally practiced on fine cotton and muslin fabrics, this hand embroidery reflects a legacy of royal patronage and refined aesthetics. Characterized by intricate floral and paisley motifs, Chikankari employs a variety of stitches—such as bakhiya, phanda, and jaali—to create textured patterns that appear almost lace-like. Executed predominantly in white thread on pastel or white fabric, the art emphasizes grace, restraint, and harmony rather than bold ornamentation. Deeply rooted in cultural traditions and everyday attire, Chikankari has evolved over time, adapting to contemporary fashion while preserving its timeless charm. Today, it adorns garments, home furnishings, and accessories, continuing to symbolize the enduring artistry and cultural sophistication of its region.

The Artist

Nagma Parveen is a contemporary Chikankari artist from Lucknow with over 12 years of experience in the craft. Her journey began not just through familial tradition—having grown up watching her mother stitch delicate white-on-white embroidery—but also through research and fieldwork. While working on the documentation of Awadhi crafts at the Mahindra Sanatkada Lucknow Festival in 2018–19, she witnessed a gap between authentic Chikankari and what was being sold in the market. Moved by the demand for genuine, handcrafted work, she began reviving traditional Chikankari on pure cotton and silk, offering subtle, high-quality pieces to conscious buyers. Determined to break the boundaries of convention, Nagma infused her practice with innovation—reimagining motif placements, experimenting with silhouettes, and introducing Chikankari in home décor and wearable art. Her work has been showcased at Serendipity Arts Festival (2024) and India Art Fair (2025) through Bridge Bharat. With an eye on both heritage and relevance, Nagma continues to push Chikankari forward—making it meaningful for new generations while staying rooted in its grace and history.
