The Painting
This intricate artwork depicts Lord Krishna’s life in a traditional Pattachitra style of painting where in the center the artist has painted Lord Vishnu in his resting pose on top of Adi-Shesha (primeval serpent) alongside his consort Goddess Lakshmi. The central panel is surrounded by different panels, four of which are situated at each end. These hold the images of various Gods-Goddesses. While two rectangular panels above and below the central image show Lord Krishna in his various Leelas (forms). The one above shows him performing Raas-Lila alongside his beloved Radha while two Gopis (female cow-herds) lovingly fan him. The one below showcases the tale from Bhagavad Purana of Lord Krishna vanquishing the venomous Kaliya Naag as the residents of Gokul cheered him. The panel shows young Lord Krishna standing on top of Kaliya Naag after forgiving him for his deeds and performing one final dance for his fellow villagers. The artist has bonded this intricately crafted painting by drawing several smaller images designed in a circular panel around the central image of Lord Vishnu. These smaller images depict the life of Lord Krishna; from when he was born to how he defeated Kansa. She has used naturally occurring colors on cotton cloth.
The Artform
Pattachitra Painting is a thousand-year-old artform, derived from two words patta which means “cloth” and chitra which means “picture”. It is a traditional cloth-based scroll painting of Odisha originating from a small village called Raghurajpur near Puri. The works are mostly based on Hindu deities, especially the iconography from Jagannath and Vaishnava sect. Pattachitra artists create a tableau of rich, potent motifs using naturally occurring colors, gum and chalk.
The Artist
Born in 1987 in the village of Dandasahi, near the famous Pattachitra Crafts Village, Geetanjali Das had begun learning the art form of Pattachitra since the age of ten from her Guru Late Shri Arjun Mohrana who was a National Award-winning artist. She worked with him for ten years where she learnt the form and technique and how to prepare traditional colors used in Pattachitra. Her work mainly focuses on Hindu religious themes which she paints on Tussar Silk and hand-made canvas. She has participated in several art exhibitions in and around Orissa with her late husband who was also a fellow Pattachitra artist.
