The Painting

Camels on Green: Set against a spring-green ground, a flowering Tree of Life rises at the centre of the composition, its dense canopy built from hundreds of individually rendered white blossoms, each with a golden pistil, threaded through with gilded sprays of leaves. Beneath the tree, pairs of camels recline on either side of the trunk, and a file of five camels processes across the width of the painting. A border of stylised waves and two fish sits at the base. Cattle on Teal: On a teal ground, the same Tree of Life motif is reprised. In place of camels, two pairs of cows recline beneath the branches with a calf beside each pair, while a herd of cattle moves across the lower band and a single donkey grazes at the far left. Ink Line on Yellow: This work repeats the cattle-and-tree composition but strips away colour altogether, rendering the entire scene in fine black ink line on a warm yellow ground, foregrounding Joshi's draughtsmanship.
